RIGA region

Riga region is located in the central part of Latvia with capital city Riga. Riga is situated by the southern coast of the Gulf of Riga, by the Baltic Sea. Latvia’s largest river - Daugava flows through the city. Riga was founded by German merchants in 1201, and it has been a Hanseatic town. Here, in Riga, on November 18, 1918 the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed. The Historic Centre of Riga is a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

If you want to see more than Riga alone, go to the near Babite district, where you can take a walk in Tirelis marsh, the trail is 5 km long. You can explore the peculiarly beautiful world of the marsh. You can also take a stroll along Kemeri National Park, located near Babite, in Engure district.
 
If you decide to go to the north side of Latvia, visit Salacgriva district, see and explore lamprey fishing and weir, which is little known in the world. On your way to Salacgriva stop at Saulkrasti and take a walk through Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von Münchhausen’s forest trails and museum. He was the world's biggest liar. He invented his own adventures and was a big storyteller.
If your path leads to Zemgale region, visit Iksķile district and see St.Meinard Island with the first brick building in the Baltic States - ruins of the church. But if are travelling to Vidzeme district, definitely visit Sigulda and Gauja valley.
 
You can see a number of castles in Riga region, as well. If on a one day trip, you can manage to see the medieval Jaunpils castle in Jaunpils district, Slokenbeka Manor in Engure district, Durbe and Jaunmoku castles in Tukums district, or Krimulda Manor in Krimulda district, Birini and Igate castles in Limbazi district, Turaida medieval castle in Sigulda district.
 
But if you are tempted by the sea, definitely visit one of the resort cities – Jurmala. It has a 32 km long white sand beach. If you go to the northern coastline of Latvia,you will see it is rich with sandstone cliffs, rocky coves and sandy beaches. Hike along the rocky sea coast, which stretches 14 km in Salacgriva and Limbazi districts. Enjoy a wonderful rest, a number of peculiar nature sights, for example, Ķurmrags and Vesczemju red cliffs or a unique nature reserve, one of the most important nesting sites in Europe near Salacgriva district.
 
You can easily travel around the Riga region, for all the sights are not far from Riga, at most, a two hour drive by car or public transport.
 
Riga region includes - Adazi, Aloja, Babite, Baldone, Carnikava, Engure, Garkalne, Iksķile, Incukalns, Jaunpils, Kandava, Krimulda, Ķegums, Ķekava, Lielvadre, Limbazi, Malpils, Marupe, Ogre, Olaine, Ropazi, Salacgrivs, Salaspils, Saulkrasti, Seja, Sigulda, Tukums, Stopini districts. The largest cities in Riga region are: Riga, Jurmala, Tukums, Ogre, Sigulda and Limbazi.
